How to Sew a Bowl Cozy - Fabric Bowl

This is a nice, quick and rewarding sewing project! I used for this project a ruler or template from Creative Grids. It was great to use it, easy and fast to cut the fabrics. I also bought the pre-cut batting by The Gypsy Quilter and it was nice to have that already cut to match perfectly the pieces of cotton I used for the bowl cozy. You can also cut your own batting with the template if you prefer.

I bought both the ruler and the pre cut batting at our local fabric store and they ship all over, you can find them at Boxer Craft House.

Find a quick video from my Instagram account where I show a little bit of the process of making this cute bowl cozy, click HERE

You can make this project a lot more interesting and fun by adding more stitches and decoration to the fabrics you use. For example I made me a bowl cozy with a nice piece of linen that when I had to attach the batting to it I had the idea of stitching several lines in different colors, it was fun and I like how it turned out! I will show more pictures at the end but here is one photo of the bowl cozy finished! I used for the other side a pretty textile from Peru!

Stitching all those lines was the fun part of this project and gave me a lot more ideas of how to enhance a little fabric bowl! See more pictures at the end of this blog.

BOWL COZY (Smaller size)

You will need two pieces of cotton and two pieces of batting for one bowl cozy.

Materials:

One fat quarter or two if you would like to have a different print for each side or - 11” squares cotton fabric or any soft fabric.

Two pre cut batting or two - 11” squares cotton batting if you will cut your own.

Sewing machine, scissors, pins, fabric markers and thread.

Optional: Bowl cozy template/ruler by Creative Grids, rotary cutter and cutting mat.

Cutting Steps:

Fold the fat quarter or piece fabric of fabric in 4ths so one side has a folded side. Place the ruler with the sides that says folded edge on the corner. Use the rotary cutter to cut all around. The ruler has seam allowances included. If you prefer you can trace all around with a pen and then use scissors to cut all around. Make sure to pin the layers of fabrics if you cut with scissors.

  1. Iron the fabrics to be used.

  2. Fold the fabric squares into quarters.

  3. Place template edges marked “Folded Edge” along the folded edges of the fabric.

  4. Use a rotary cutter to cut around the curved edge of the template and the darts. Do not cut the folded edges.

  5. You can also cut  with scissors by first marking around the template on the wrong side of the fabric with a fabric marker or pen.

  6. Repeat for the batting if you are using a roll of batting (no need to iron the batting)

  • The ruler includes seam allowance.

These pretty fabrics are by designer Jillian Nichol Anderson and my friend from Instagram, so happy to sew with some of her pretty fabrics! You can find these fabrics and the whole collection at Hawthorne Supply.co

Sewing Steps:

  1. Fold the pieces of cotton in half in both ways to find the center line. Crease it with your fingernails or with the iron.  Use a marker to mark the crease if you need to see the line better.  (On this line we will sew to attach the batting to the cotton)

  2. Place the cotton fabric over the piece of cotton batting.  Align the edges. Pin both materials together and stitch on the line we marked on step one. Make a simple X from outer corner to outer corner, or quilt as desired with any design. Repeat with the other pieces (cotton and batting) At this point is where you could get creative and add more stitches, quilted in any fun design, embroider it, etc.

  3. Align the dart edges, and sew ¼” seam. Press seams open or press to one side. Repeat for the second set (lining)

  4. Place the 2 sets with right sides together, matching the dart seams and the raw edges. Pin in place.

  5. Stitch around the outside edges of the bowl with a ¼” seam allowance. Leave an opening of 2-3” for turning.

  6. Clip extra seam allowances. Turn the bowl inside out.  Use the iron to press all the seams and turn in the seams of the opening. Stitch by hand the opening or just topstitch all around the edge of the bowl.

  7. Iron very well all around and enjoy your new Bowl Cozy!

I hope you enjoy sewing this fabric bowl!

Some of my personal tips in sewing:

  • Always use the iron to flatten seams. Ironing throughout the sewing process and at the end to smooth everything out. You would be surprised how much prettier your projects will look after being ironed very well!

  • Experiment and do not be afraid!

  • If you feel like you need to do basting stitches before using the sewing machine, go for it! It might take you a little longer but for beginners that is the way to start!

  • And lastly, have lots of fun!

The inspiration for the idea I had to decorate a piece of linen: A beautiful textile from Peru! I picked threads in similar colors to this textile.

Selecting the threads to match the pretty Peruvian textile.

Below see some pictures of the bowl cozy I made decorating the piece of linen with lots of stitches! The piece of linen shrunk up a little compared to the other piece of fabric but it was no problem. At the moment to join both pieces together I just followed the linen piece and the shorter one as my guide.

Hope you have lots of fun sewing your own bowl cozy! This design with the rounded edges is very pretty!
